Leonardo da Vinci |
Shadow is the obstruction of light. Shadows appear to me to be of supreme importance in perspective, because, without them opaque and solid bodies will be ill defined; that which is contained within their outlines and their boundaries themselves will be ill-understood unless they are shown against a background of a different tone from themselves. |

I have a really hard time watching gory stuff and horror movies. I have said no to some horror movie things. I wouldn't rule it out; I could probably be convinced to do one. But sometimes, I just get ill. |
John Keats |
I have been astonished that men could die martyrs for religion - I have shuddered at it. I shudder no more - I could be martyred for my religion - Love is my religion - I could die for that. |
Vera Farmiga |
We're all sick of holy wars and bloodshed because religion is supposed to give us life and a better life and is supposed to bring out our best self. When it results in mass destruction and hatred and anxiety, it's the antithesis I think of what religion was designed to do. |
Zach Galifianakis |
Hollywood's built on insecurity. People are trying to prove things. And I probably have that. I probably do. Probably guilty of it, in a way. |
Anton du Beke |
My goal is to be the best TV presenter, the best entertainer, the best singer. I still want to be the best dancer. I want to be the best at everything I do. |
Malcolm X |
America needs to understand Islam, because this is the one religion that erases from its society the race problem. Throughout my travels in the Muslim world, I have met, talked to, even eaten with people who in America would have been considered 'white,' but the 'white' attitude had been removed from their minds by the religion of Islam. |
Buddha |
To enjoy good health, to bring true happiness to one's family, to bring peace to all, one must first discipline and control one's own mind. If a man can control his mind he can find the way to Enlightenment, and all wisdom and virtue will naturally come to him. |
Ernest Istook |
The courts are using the First Amendment to attack religion, when they should be using it to protect religion. |
A. A. Milne |
The third-rate mind is only happy when it is thinking with the majority. The second-rate mind is only happy when it is thinking with the minority. The first-rate mind is only happy when it is thinking. |

"The conflict model of science and religion offered a mistaken view of the past and, when combined with expectations of secularisation, led to a flawed vision of the future. Secularisation theory failed at both description and prediction. The real question is why we continue to encounter proponents of science-religion conflict. Many are prominent scientists. It would be superfluous to rehearse Richard Dawkins’s musings on this topic, but he is by no means a solitary voice. Stephen Hawking thinks that ‘science will win because it works’; Sam Harris has declared that ‘science must destroy religion’; Stephen Weinberg thinks that science has weakened religious certitude; Colin Blakemore predicts that science will eventually make religion unnecessary. Historical evidence simply does not support such contentions. Indeed, it suggests that they are misguided."

"Today mother died. Or maybe yesterday; I can't be sure." This alludes to his claim that life is engrossed by the absurd. He believed that the absurd – life being void of meaning, or man's inability to know that meaning if it were to exist – was something that man should embrace. He argued that this crisis of self could cause a man to commit "philosophical suicide"; choosing to believe in external sources that give life (what he would describe as false) meaning. He argued that religion was the main culprit. If a man chose to believe in religion – that the meaning of life was to ascend to heaven, or some similar afterlife, that he committed philosophical suicide by trying to escape the absurd.

the trouble is in the mind, for the body is only the house for the mind to dwell in, and we put a value on it according to its worth. Therefore if your mind has been deceived by some invisible enemy into a belief, you have put it into the form of a disease, with or without your knowledge. By my theory or truth, I come in contact with your enemy and restore you to your health and happiness. This I do partly mentally and partly by talking till I correct the wrong impressions and establish the Truth, and the Truth is the cure.

Some things in this article are poorly defined or supported. Overall, I think it's an obvious claim and that people's immense existential insecurity is what keeps religion alive. That and over-generalization and misattribution of observations and patterns.
"Its advocates would be well advised to stop fabricating an enemy out of religion, or insisting that the only path to a secure future lies in a marriage of science and secularism" - what is a "secure future"? Yeah, there are some famous people listed in the article, but I think most scientists stay out of this stuff. There are so many scientists that are religious. People compartmentalize. ...

I just drank some caffeine so my mind is fresh. But the caffeine was in the form of a Monster so my mouth does not feel fresh. I'm going to brush my teeth so that my mouth matches my mind. This is the creed I live by.

Dawkins also talks about religion as some of the oldest and most successful memes. He talks about religious memes as powerful weapons in war.

I think religion is like a lifeboat floating in the ocean. If it's the thing you know, it is overwhelming to think about leaving it and seeing what else is out there. The ocean is mysterious and full of wonderful interesting unknowns. Swimming takes effort, but without it, all you see is the lifeboat and the surface.

An idea that came from lots of caffeine and appeared to sort of work when I tried it. When alone, with no distractions, try to think of random and creative things. You will soon notice a sort of limitation to the form and rapidity that these things have and come into your mind. At that point, consciously choose to stop and think more outside of the box, with broader shapes and ideas. Feel out the edges of where this new approach can take you and you will soon encounter another wall of sorts past which your mind isn't really creative enough to go. At this point, again consciously stop imagining strange things and focus entirely on your senses and spatial awareness. For me I noticed that by trying to push the limits of the inside of my head I felt a noticeable difference in the way I percieved the "real" world. I felt as though the space my body and mind occupy have been given more room, more fresh air, more fluidity. This was especially noticeable with my hearing, which seemed much sha...
