This is interesting. I would think Google would know better than to give an easy image classification problem. It's not difficult now to grab someone else's code and train pretty accurate models. I'm sure they have models to do the same thing. I wonder if what they're doing is showing us the examples that their models get wrong.
The mouse movement CAPTCHA is interesting too. I could definitely record my mouse movements for a week or so and then build a model to emulate those movements. |

right. it is possible but i think the images are more complicated than its worth to break. plus by the time you successfully crack 'dogs' theyll have another subject to guess. now they are trying to move more towards the 'checkbox' captcha. it tracks your mouse movements and compares them to other people and your own habits. someone did make a physical robot to move a mouse and click it that was successful lol

“What can I do?” My simple answer is, next time you see a problem, don’t start a cupcake company that gives back—just solve it. When you see a problem, think of a solution that is public, democratic, institutional, and universal. Think of a solution that solves the problem for everybody at the root. And then build movements.

It seems like the way to go is just to have a huge variety of different possible captchas, but I would think that once you have more than a couple bots working together to build models not even that would hold up forever. Abstractly, though, doesn't it boil down to this - Is there a set of problems that a human can answer easily and a computer cannot, but the computer can still recognize a correct answer easily? My instinct is that as soon as you define that set you can build a machine to generate solutions. But I guess the answer to the real question of whether it's worth it depends on if you can build a machine that builds machines that generate solutions. And I think for just the images alone the answer is probably yes - audio/video I'm less sure about.

Human CAPTCHA services cost money don't they? Not a lot but like-- pennies. Reed is saying you could have your program generate a new model by taking the word of the thing they ask you to identify and scraping Google images to get training data.

Probably has to do with how you think about numbers. It's not easy for everyone to remember phone numbers. Phone numbers are grouped into parts. You have an area code, then three digits, then four digits. You might have an association in your head for area codes. I know when I think of a friend I think of where they grew up and then I remember the area code, then I just have to remember 7 digits. From what I read about memory techniques, it's easier to remember if you have an image or association. You could do something like, assign a person, place, and action to each digit. Then in three digit groupings, if you have a number like 517, you could say 5 is the person 'Santa', 1 is the location 'the zoo' and 7 is 'eating a cake' and then you'd remember that image and be able to get the number back from your mapping. There are lots of tricks like this for names, numbers, etc. I think people probably subconsciously develop some sort of less complicated representations and certain things ar...

Thieves steal a Tesla Model S by hacking the entry fob Breaking in to the EV was easier than unplugging it.
A Tesla owner who recorded thieves stealing his Model S by hacking the passive entry system has published the video on YouTube so we can all watch (and learn). It shows the crooks using a tablet to apparently capture the passive signal from his keyfob, then using the data to open the vehicle. Amusingly, the pair didn't drive off as quickly as they could have simply because they couldn't figure out how to detach the charging cable (hint: there's a button).

Researchers at the University of Maryland have managed to trick Google's reCaptcha system by using Google's own speech-to-text service.
