African-Americans have been brainwashed into not being open-minded, not even considering a conservative point of view. I have received some of that same vitriol simply because I am running for the Republican nomination as a conservative. So it's just brainwashing and people not being open-minded, pure and simple. |
Richard Dawkins |
By all means let's be open-minded, but not so open-minded that our brains drop out. |

My grandfather once told me that there were two kinds of people: those who do the work and those who take the credit. He told me to try to be in the first group; there was much less competition. |

Stanley Kubrick, I had been told, hates interviews. It's hard to know what to expect of the man if you've only seen his films. One senses in those films painstaking craftsmanship, a furious intellect at work, a single-minded devotion. |
Casey Affleck |
For people who have... had curve balls thrown at them, it is easier to digest change and digest change in other people. Change only scares the small-minded. The small-minded and me. |
Michelle Obama |
My experiences at Princeton have made me far more aware of my 'blackness' than ever before. I have found that at Princeton, no matter how liberal and open-minded some of my white professors and classmates try to be toward me, I sometimes feel like a visitor on campus; as if I really don't belong. |

I told my wife the truth. I told her I was seeing a psychiatrist. Then she told me the truth: that she was seeing a psychiatrist, two plumbers, and a bartender. |
Christina Aguilera |
The most vulnerable people have tough exteriors because they are very scared inside, and it's very hard for people like that - people like me - to open up. But playing it safe means you stop being open to learning. I always try to find the challenges. |
Vera Farmiga |
Someone once told me that religion is like a knife: You can stab someone with it, or you can slice bread with it. |
Will Smith |
If you're not willing to work hard, let someone else do it. I'd rather be with someone who does a horrible job, but gives 110% than with someone who does a good job and gives 60%. |

Here is the kind of thing that bugs the crap out of me about Windows 8.
I just tried to open my recycling bin and delete the files. I opened the window and hit delete and the files disappeared. Then I hit ALT+F4 to close the window and I get a message that says "close the window and cancel file transfer?" What the hell?! The OS is scheduling the release of the file pointers or something which shouldn't take that long and it's telling me that it can't close the window because it's not done? But then if you hit the 'X' to close the window it works... Horrible design.

Group of Biologists Tries To Bury the Idea That Plants Are Conscious
Frustrated by more than a decade of research which claims to reveal intentions, feelings and even consciousness in plants, more traditionally minded botanists have finally snapped. Plants, they protest, are emphatically not conscious. From a report:
The latest salvo in the plant consciousness wars has been fired by US, British and German biologists who argue that practitioners of "plant neurobiology" have become carried away with the admittedly impressive abilities of plants to sense and react to their environments. While ...

I don't think everyone in your dreams is yourself. In a solipsistic sense everything all the time is part of you. Everything you see and experience is in your brain. I think you can imagine other people in your dreams and they are expressions of your perceptions and to some degree reflections of yourself, but that degree could be close to 100% or close to 0%.

When I grow up, I want to have enough money to open up a cafe in San Francisco. Maybe in the castro. Or...maybe close to the beach on the west side. I want to decorate it nicely and I want to serve nisu with matcha spread. I would also serve arepas bc there aren't places that serve good arepas there and my boyfriend really likes those. I would probably make him make them though. I would allow doggos to come so that i could pet them. I would make some dope toasts with my nisu. Like avocado and such. I really like coriander and lime.

Researcher Turns HDD Into Rudimentary Microphone
Speaking at a security conference, researcher Alfredo Ortega has revealed that you can use your hard disk drive (HDD) as a rudimentary microphone to pick up nearby sounds. This is possible because of how hard drives are designed to work. Sounds or nearby vibrations are nothing more than mechanical waves that cause HDD platters to vibrate. By design, a hard drive cannot read or write information to an HDD platter that moves under vibrations, so the hard drive must wait for the oscillation to stop before carrying out any actions. Because modern operating systems come with utilities that measure HDD operations up to nanosecond accuracy, Ortega realized that he could use these tools to measure delays in HDD operations. The longer the delay, t...

Mozilla Releases Open Source Speech Recognition Model, Massive Voice Dataset
Mozilla's VP of Technology Strategy, Sean White, writes: I'm excited to announce the initial release of Mozilla's open source speech recognition model that has an accuracy approaching what humans can perceive when listening to the same recordings... There are only a few commercial quality speech recognition services available, dominated by a small number of large companies. This reduces user choice and available features for startups, researchers or even larger companies that want to speech-enable their products and services. This is why we started DeepSpeech as an open source project. ...

I had a dream that I was in a tall building that looked like hotel rooms and offices and I was waiting deep in this hotel-room type looking thing (but much bigger) around a bunch of corners for someone to open this door and try to assassinate me. There were a lot of mirrors so even though I was way in the back as far from the door as possible, I could still see the door and I was just waiting for it to open.
