The software patent problem is not limited to Mono. Software patents affect everyone writing software today. |
Bill Gates |
The way to be successful in the software world is to come up with breakthrough software, and so whether it's Microsoft Office or Windows, its pushing that forward. New ideas, surprising the marketplace, so good engineering and good business are one in the same. |

I think the most difficult thing had been scaling the infrastructure. Trying to support the response we had received from our users and the number of people that were interested in using the software. |

For me, for the type of addict I am, when I start getting those swirly thoughts and stuff, and they talk about slippery places, slippery people and slippery things, you know, I need to - I needed to take my cell phone and eliminate all the phone numbers, change the phone numbers so no one I knew before could call me or reach me. |

Besides Germany, the only countries that don't have speed limits are places like Nepal, where road conditions are so bad that a limit would be beside the point. In other words, it's a little crazy that this is even a topic for debate in Germany. |

But in the meantime I became accustomed to the writing life and it would be hard to change now - partly because of the salary cut if I went to my other love, teaching; and partly because I still have stories to tell, even though it isn't all that fun doing the work anymore. |

For whatever reason, we relate to anything godlike with an English accent. The English are very proud of that. And with anything Roman or gladiators, they have an English accent. For an audience, it is an easy trick to hook people in. |
James Fenton |
English poetry begins whenever we decide to say the modern English language begins, and it extends as far as we decide to say that the English language extends. |

I guess anime helped me understand the Japanese culture a little better and makes me want to honor certain language nuances that don't always translate to English. |

At my work, we have meetings about how to improve software that doesn't exist, and probably never will. Most people pretend to read documentation about how the software works. Cuz I just write it for fun obviously ::emoji of an elephant doing the quirk jerk:: when they suggest software to use, I just ask them to do a competitive/comparative analysis if possible, and that usually solves it.

Amazon Will Pay $0 in Federal Taxes on $11.2 Billion Profits (fortune.com)
Those wondering how many zeros Amazon, which is valued at nearly $800 billion, has to pay in federal taxes might be surprised to learn that its check to the IRS will read exactly $0.00. From a report:
According to a report published by the Institute on Taxation and Economic (ITEP) policy Wednesday, the e-tail/retail/tech/entertainment/everything giant won't have to pay a cent in federal taxes for the second year in a row. This tax-free break comes even though Amazon almost doubled its U.S. profits from $5.6 billion t...

I had a dream I was in the USA and I was driving around in a car with my friends and we were trying to figure out how to buy property on the river or lake or some body of water and I got out of the car to ask a group of people sitting on the lawn and I apologized for not speaking their language and then tried to ask them if they knew English and how they got property here but it was in the USA so that was a strange thing to apologize for and that was pretty much all that happened that I remember.

You're also choosing the sequence. There is a finite number of sequences but those are really big numbers. You can easily choose a sequence of numbers no one has chosen before. I think that counts as creating something new. I mean... you don't get to decide which numbers exist, but you can choose which ones to run.

What's the Most Sophisticated Piece of Software Ever Written?
An anonymous reader writes: Stuxnet is the most sophisticated piece of software ever written, given the difficulty of the objective: Deny Iran's efforts to obtain weapons grade uranium without need for diplomacy or use of force, John Byrd, CEO of Gigantic Software (formerly Director of Sega and SPM at EA), argues in a blog post, which is being widely shared in developer circles, with most agreeing with Byrd's conclusion.
He writes...

IRS Now Has a Tool To Unmask Bitcoin Tax Evaders You can use bitcoin. But you can't hide from the taxman. At least, that's the hope of the Internal Revenue Service, which has purchased specialist software to track those using bitcoin, according to a contract obtained by The Daily Beast. The document highlights how law enforcement isn't only concerned with criminals accumulating bitcoin from selling drugs or hacking targets, but also those who use the currency to hide wealth or avoid paying taxes. The IRS has claimed that only 802 people declared bitcoin losses or profits in 2015; clearly fewer than the actual number of people trading the cryptocurrency -- especially as more investors dip into the world of cryptocurrencies, and the value of bitcoin punches past the $4,000 mark. Maybe lots of bitcoin traders didn't realize the government expects to collect tax on their digital earnings, ...

Can you change the code to preserve the actual line breaks and spacing of posts the way that they're written? Poetry doesnt work if all the lines run together.

Is anyone familiar with the psychology of numbers? Why is it that it's so easy for me to remember 7 or even 10 digit phone numbers for friends and relatives, but I can't remember the name of someone I met 5 seconds ago?

I'm trying to figure out the best way to change the posting into a real-time chat. So each thought page would then be sort of like a chat room but if you commented on the thought of a thought they would branch off.

I had some other dream where my ex-girlfriend was hiding in a tree somewhere near where I worked and she worked at the same company but it was a secret. Then there was some other person that I was friends with that did not resemble anyone I had ever met. I think my brain was trying to tell me that it is surprising sometimes how things change and how what you think you know doesn't always matter later on.
