President Schlissel at the University of Michigan refuses tests to people and then when they can get tests has them escorted by cops to quarantine dorms with roaches, no food, no microwaves, no bed sheets, and then when students don't want to get tested at UoM or tell UoM they tested positive he says: "A lack of cooperation is a potential violation of our Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities."
Fuck that guy. |

Positive rights are the right to shelter, the right to education, the right to health care, the right to a living wage. These things are - these are, I would call them, more properly, political rights rather than positive rights. And they are extremely tricky, because now we are dealing with things that are zero sum. |

I still think of that guy I was without a wife or kids, and I still want to entertain that guy. The lonely guy, the frustrated guy, the guy with no money - this is the guy who needs to laugh. |

I think Michigan keeps you sane and on an even keel through the ups and downs. In Michigan, I do fireworks, shovel snow and live life. |

I talk to student-athletes. I try to get them to remember that they're not just athletes, but student-athletes. You need to get an education, keep your hands clean and try to represent the university. |

The world is littered with constitutions that have written guarantees of rights but that don't actually deliver rights. What differentiates the ones where rights are real from where rights are fake is that it's in the initial interests of the majority to actually deliver these rights. |

Everyone says we have our first African American president. Has there ever been a Jewish president? An Italian president? They don't say a damn thing about that. You think we're still fighting the Civil War or something. If you want to mention it in passing, OK. But don't dwell on it. |

Scholarships that allow students to get a good education are important, but first we want to measure the progress that the schools are teaching our students, we want to hold them accountable for the progress, we want to hold the schools accountable for teaching the young people in America. |

A lot of people want to not wear a tie when they go to a restaurant. They feel they don't have to wear a tie. I think it's kind of a statement they're making. I don't know what that statement is. I haven't quite figured that out yet. |

Ending up-front fees should make it far easier for all students to go to university as they will no longer have to pay up to /1,125 out of their loans at the start of each year. Student loans will also rise to meet average living costs. |

From food trucks to hot dog stands to county fair favorites, 'street food' has enjoyed a rich and storied history in American cuisine. However, street food has been around for thousands of years. In fact, street food is believed to have originated as far back as Ancient Rome. |

Hey everyone! I'm Charlie's buddy MiiIIiIIIiiRRiiAAmmmMMmm for those of you who don't know me (and Reed's roommate if any of you know him). I was hoping maybe one or two or three of you could help me out with something. I AM IN NEED OF KIDS.
Explanation: I'm learning how to administer cognitive tests to kids as part of my training in clinical psychology. I need to find children ages 6 to 16 that would be willing to take practice cognitive tests with me this summer (and parents that are willing), but I don't know any in kids in Michigan. Do any of you have siblings/cousins that are kids or know people who have kids that might be interested? A lot of kids actually find it fun, and I would give them a small prize/thank-you gift. I'm also really, really desperate. ...

Researchers Create 'Sans Forgetica,' a Memory-Boosting Font (cnn.com) 5
CNN reports on a new font that is purposely designed to more easily help students recall academic materials they read. From the report: "Australian researchers say their new font, called Sans Forgetica, could be the tool to help people retain information. The typeface, which slants to the side and has gaps in the middle, is not easy on the eyes. But according to the team at RMIT University in Australia who conceived Sans Forgetica, it has the perfect combination of 'obstruction' needed to recall information. The multidisciplinary team of typographic design specialists and psychologists said they designed Sans Forgetica using the learning principle called 'desirable difficulty.' The principle means that when obstructi...

Spot the bullshit:
"On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Education announced its new plan to help tackle debt for those who borrowed federal money to pay for student loans.
In a new streamlining process, borrowers who have approved claims that confirm their college or institution defrauded them or engaged in financial misconduct will be able to apply for full relief.
Officials estimate that t...

I don't disagree with that, and we did make an effort to be prompt in responding to questions on Piazza. The attitude was more the problem. It certainly wasn't everyone, but a small fraction of rude/entitled students in a 200+ person class is enough to be felt. They seemed to forget that we're also students and have other responsibilities as well.

I had a dream that the spiral staircase in the BBB was in the middle of that giant open space instead of the corner and that the University of Michigan would hire well known actors to stand at the bottom of various staircases in the building and make fun of students that walk by.

Student chaIn college, you can use your time to study. Or then again, you could perhaps rely on the Hand of God.
And when I say “Hand of God,” what I really mean is “keylogger.”
Think of it like the “Nimble Fingers of God.”
“Hand of God” (that makes sense) and “pineapple” (???) are two of the nicknames allegedly used to refer to keyloggers used by a former University of Iowa wrestler and stude...

The Mere Presence of Your Smartphone Reduces Brain Power, Study Shows (utexas.edu)
An anonymous reader shares a study: Your cognitive capacity is significantly reduced when your smartphone is within reach -- even if it's off. That's the takeaway finding from a new study from the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin. McCombs Assistant Professor Adrian Ward and co-authors conducted experiments with nearly 800 smartphone users in an attempt to measure, for the first time, how well people can complete tasks when they have their smartphones nearby even when they're not using them. In one experiment, the researchers asked study participants to sit at a computer and tak...

A New Mexico woman is being tested for the Ebola virus in Albuquerque after recently returning from Africa, according to state health officials.
And in Sacramento, Calif. hospital officials say a patient ?who may have been exposed to the Ebola virus? is also in isolation as blood samples are tested to rule out the virus.
The 30-year-old woman is in isolation as a precaution at the University of New Mexico Hospital after experiencing symptoms similar to the virus that has killed more than 1,200 people overseas as of Tuesday, according to health officials. ...
