I don't understand why like every shopping mall I've ever been in has an import store that sells knives that are illegal to own. Is that why those stores go out of business every couple months and get replaced by a different import store? It's literally every single one. Like what are even the repercussions of getting caught selling those? |

I don't think it ever does any harm in any business to feel that there is someone there who cares about it. If you look at any business, fashion being the most obvious, the aura, or the reality of the designer, is part of what creates it. It's true in luxury goods stores and in good food stores. It leaves a palpable sense that someone cares. |

Hospitals are closing across the country due to the burden of illegal immigration, college students find that summer jobs have dried up due to illegal immigration, and wages across the board are depressed by the overwhelming influx of cheap and illegal labor. |

Certainly, R.E.M. grew out of the Wuxtry record store in Athens, where Peter Buck was working and Michael Stipe came in to visit. And even their later manager, Bertis Downs, they all met and congregated at that record store. So I'm sure we wouldn't see those without the record store. |

It's about getting the kids up and fed, getting one to school, getting the other down for a nap, going to the grocery store, picking one up from school, getting the other one down for another nap, cooking dinner... I live my life at these two extremes. I'm either a full-time stay-at-home mom or a full-time actress. |

It's business, selling comics, you work out what sells and you don't want to muck about with it too much. |

If you're creating something that has some sort of cultural currency - if the idea is getting out there - then that will probably yield money in some form, whether it's through selling art or selling books or being asked to give a lecture. |

Marathon running, like golf, is a game for players, not winners. That is why Callaway sells golf clubs and Nike sells running shoes. But running is unique in that the world's best racers are on the same course, at the same time, as amateurs, who have as much chance of winning as your average weekend warrior would scoring a touchdown in the NFL. |

We're competing with everything: the beach, the mall, bookstores. Libraries are in a transition right now, caught between two forces, the old ways and technology. Libraries are under a lot of pressure to provide both. |

I was shopping with my mother in 2006 and saw that there was a model casting going on. A couple of months later, I was one of the fifteen finalists in an international contest. |

I don't care how much it costs or who it's by as long as it fits me. I love shopping, but I go to the same stores I've always gone to: Guess, Bebe, Coach. I can't really skip out of that realm. |

"BEND, Ore. (AP) — There are challenges that come with running the last Blockbuster Video on the planet.
The computer system must be rebooted using floppy disks that only the general manager — a solid member of Gen X — knows how to use. The dot-matrix printer broke, so employees write out membership cards by hand. And the store’s business transactions are backed up on a reel-to-reel tape that can’t be replaced because Radio Shack went out of business."

Walmart Patents Cart That Reads Your Pulse, Temperature (vice.com) 114
Walmart recently applied to patent biometric shopping handles that would track a shopper's heart rate, palm temperature, grip force, and walking speed. "The patent, titled 'System And Method For A Biometric Feedback Cart Handle' and published August 23, outlines a system where sensors in the cart send data to a server," reports Motherboard. "That server then notifies a store employee to check on individual customers." From the report: Over time, the server can build a database of data compared against store location and stress response, the patent says -- potentially valuable information for store planning. Other uses o...

Understanding how buy and sell walls work, and why they indicate the opposite of what you think they do. This is market 101 stuff, but I think a lot of people don't understand this, so I'm going to help explain it.
I'm going to help explain this phenomena, because this is how big players enter or exit a market. This is how they create the liquidity they need, while eliminating the slippage which they don't want. I've had a few people lately that completely didn't understand this, and I figured there could be a lot of new investors (not just crypto, but market investors) that could benefit from a thorough explanation of this maneuver.

I had a dream that involved this shopping center a lot for some reason. I went there with my parents and I went there with my violin to play a few times and it seemed like the past because I had my parent's old car. But then also in grad school, ppl were texting me asking where I was and I was like always at one of the places in the center. One was a steak n shake and ppl would text me and be like "where are you" and I'd tell them I was there and they asked me why and I was like I love milkshakes what don't you understand. And then I remember doing academic things and traveling with the lab but then having to leave one place early to go to France. One person knew that I knew this one guy that died and she was like asking me to tell other people what he had said to me and I was like I don't know. I think you guys know everything. I don't think he told me anything he didn't tell you but this really stressed me out for some reason that she thought I knew more. And I was sad and ppl didn'...

oih yes. also, now a days i run my scripts from a server or even my localhost through WGET and remove the output i use for testing. also another reason i use xml and import into wordpress is because they can manage a database of that sizes efficiency way better than i can. i tried to make a million page site a long time ago and it would take for ever to load my data i put in mysql directly off the scraper

Charlie, I like the new research page. (I don't know how new it actually is, but it can't have been there more than a couple months tops). How much do you pay in hosting fees per year? I'd be totally happy to chip in.

In an experiment published today in Nature, IBM researchers have managed to read and write data to a single atom. A previous atomic storage technique, as mentioned by TechCrunch, doesn't actually store data in the atom, but moves them around to form readable patterns. "This means that imbuing individual atoms with a 0 or 1 is the next major step forward and the next major barrier in storing data digitally, both increasing capacity by orders of magnitude and presenting a brand new challenge to engineers and physicists," reports TechCrunch. From the report: It works like this: A single Holmium atom (a large one with many unpaired electrons) is set on a bed of magnesium oxide. In this configuration, the atom has what's called magnetic bistability: It has two stable magnetic states with different spins (just go with it). The researchers use a scanning tunneling microscope (also invented at ...
