Saudi Arabia becomes first nation to grant citizenship to humanoid robot
The move is an attempt to promote Saudi Arabia as a place to develop artificial intelligence – and, presumably, allow it to become a full citizen. But many pointed out that those same rights aren't afforded to many humans in the country.
The robot, named Sophia, was confirmed as a Saudi citizen during a business event in Riyadh, according to an official Saudi press release.
The robot then thanked the country and the event for the attention.
“Thank you to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I am very honored and proud for this unique distinction,” Sophia told the panel. “It is historic to be the first robot in the world to be recognized with citizenship.”
Asked why she looked happy, Sophia replied: “I am always happy when surrounded by smart people who also happen to be rich and powerful. I was told that the people here at the Future Investment Initiative are interested in future initiatives which means AI, which means me. So I am more than happy, I am excited.”
She said that people didn't need to be concerned about the rise of artificial intelligence as depicted in Blade Runner and Terminator. “You’ve been reading too much Elon Musk and watching too many Hollywood movies,” she told Mr Srkin. |

With patient and firm determination, I am going to press on for jobs. I'm going to press on for equality. I'm going to press on for the sake of our children. I'm going to press on for the sake of all those families who are struggling right now. I don't have time to feel sorry for myself. I don't have time to complain. I am going to press on. |

I also know that in the second movie, the sequel, Eric made some huge advances with the robot suit. That just made it even better. You put the suit on and moved your arms then the robot's arms would move in sync with yours. |

I understand the Saudis have been named because fifteen of the nineteen hijackers were from Saudi Arabia. |

The world is littered with constitutions that have written guarantees of rights but that don't actually deliver rights. What differentiates the ones where rights are real from where rights are fake is that it's in the initial interests of the majority to actually deliver these rights. |
Muhammad Ali |
The name Muhammad is the most common name in the world. In all the countries around the world - Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon - there are more Muhammads than anything else. When I joined the Nation of Islam and became a Muslim, they gave me the most famous name because I was the champ. |

I love my country. And I would have to renounce my Spanish citizenship to become a U.S. Citizen. |

Even a minor event in the life of a child is an event of that child's world and thus a world event. |

But Saudi Arabia is surprising in a lot of ways. Like any place, or any people, it relentlessly defies easy categorization. |

Humans have always used our intelligence and creativity to improve our existence. After all, we invented the wheel, discovered how to make fire, invented the printing press and found a vaccine for polio. |

During my freshman year at Cornell, I joined my dorm's intramural football team. At the first practice, upper classmen pointed out I was tall, so I should try playing QB. Well half an hour later, it was abundantly clear that I should not be the QB. |

yeah but science has developed way farther than you see. like self driving cars are now commercial and a robot is a saudi citizen, if the militarys technology is even double our modern tech then where could they be at. (it is said that military technology is significantly more than double advanced as what we have accesss to)/
its not like its something that is available to the public. if it exists it would be highly secret and classified. if we can clone a sheep, store info in dna, send probes to mars, utilize deep learning, and have quantum computing breakthroughs - im sure theres way crazier stuff we will never hear of already in play. ...

New Study Finds It's Harder To Turn Off a Robot When It's Begging For Its Life
An anonymous reader quotes a report from The Verge: [A] recent experiment by German researchers demonstrates that people will refuse to turn a robot off if it begs for its life. In the study, published in the open access journal PLOS One, 89 volunteers were recruited to complete a pair of tasks with the help of Nao, a small humanoid robot. The participants were told that the tasks (which involved answering a series of either / or questions, like "Do you prefer pasta or pizza?"; and organizing a weekly schedule) were to improve Nao's learning algorithms. But this was just a cover story, and the real test came af...

Secretary of state call #1: Robot says 1-7 and 9 are options to hear the robot talk more, so I hit 8 and it says it's confused and so I keep hitting 8 and it says "agents are busy, try again later" SoS calls #2 and #3: I hit 8888 and the robot says "agents are busy, try again later" SoS call #4: I hit 8888 and the robot says it will put me in the queue and then 5 minutes later it says "we can call you back when someone is available" ... so now I'm waiting. It's been 45 minutes so far...

Google's AI Now Creates Code Better Than its Creators
Google's mysterious AutoML program develops neural networks of its own. The company recently announced that the AI had duplicated itself with a more efficient code.
Google's automated machine learning system recently crafted machine-learning codes more efficient than the codes that built its own system. The (robot) student has now become the teacher. For the AutoML program, it seems as if humans are no longer a necessity.

right. it is possible but i think the images are more complicated than its worth to break. plus by the time you successfully crack 'dogs' theyll have another subject to guess. now they are trying to move more towards the 'checkbox' captcha. it tracks your mouse movements and compares them to other people and your own habits. someone did make a physical robot to move a mouse and click it that was successful lol

24 Amazon Workers Sent To Hospital After Robot Accidentally Unleashes Bear Spray
Twenty-four Amazon workers in New Jersey have been hospitalized after a robot accidentally tore a can of bear repellent spray in a warehouse, officials said. The two dozen workers were treated at five local hospitals, Robbinsville Township communications and public information officer John Nalbone told ABC News. One remains in critical condition and 30 additional workers were treated at the scene. The official investigation revealed "an automated machine accidentally punctured a 9-ounce bear repellent can, releasing concentrated Capsaican," Nalbone said. Capsaican is the major ingredient in pepper spray. The fulfillment center was given the all clear by Wednesday evening. ...

Stephen Hawking Warns That AI and 'Superhumans' Could Wipe Humanity; Says There's No God in Posthumous Book
Stephen Hawking says artificial intelligence will eventually become so advanced it will "outperform humans." The renowned physicist who died in March warns of both rises in advanced artificial intelligence and genetically-enhanced "superhumans" in a book published Tuesday. Hawking also weighed in on god, and aliens. From a report: According to an excerpt of the book "Brief Answers to the Big Questions" published by the U.K.'s Sunday Times, Hawking wrote AI could prove "huge" to humanity so long as restrictions are in place to control how quickly it grows. "While primitive forms of a...

Venezuelan President Survives Drone Assassination Attempt
The Venezuelan president, Nicolas Maduro, has survived an apparent assassination attempt involving drones that exploded close to him while he was speaking at an event in Caracas. State television showed Maduro abruptly cutting short his speech during a celebration of the National Guard's 81st anniversary. From a report: In a tweet, the president of Venezuela's National Assembly, Diosdado Cabello, called the incident at the military parade a "terrorist attack against the president and the high military command blaming the opposition for the violence." Venezuela's international government broadcaster, TeleSUR, said on Twitter that th...

Bizarre futurism thought: Imagine a future where tech education is a mandatory component of schooling for all ages. Now, combine that with some kind of companion robot that kids receive when they are young and custom upgrade as they learn how throughout their life. Does the robot's development become an external symbol of the child's internal development? Would people have robot envy? Would rich assholes hire people to mod their robots in ways they don't understand (definitely)? STRANGE!
