It was a tough year for me, '89, losing two Slam finals and losing another five finals. It wasn't until I won the Masters, or what's now called the ATP Finals, that things changed again. Suddenly I won seven tournaments in 1990 and became No. 1. |

I have a hard time believing athletes are overpriced. If an owner is losing money, give it up. It's a business. I have trouble figuring out why owners would stay in if they're losing money. |

You must never be satisfied with losing. You must get angry, terribly angry, about losing. But the mark of the good loser is that he takes his anger out on himself and not his victorious opponents or on his teammates. |

My grandmother died from Alzheimer's, and it was a big shock. For the families left behind, it is not an easy closure. It's not a gradual fading. The person is losing so much of their humanity as they're dying. Losing your memories, you lose so much of who you are as a person. |

Employers have gone away from the idea that an employee is a long-term asset to the company, someone to be nurtured and developed, to a new notion that they are disposable. |

If you are only doing what you are getting paid for, and doing it no better than the average employee, then your pay is most likely right where it should be. |

I want to say here and now, that I demand unshakable integrity of every State employee. |

The real damper on employee engagement is the soggy, cold blanket of centralized authority. In most companies, power cascades downwards from the CEO. Not only are employees disenfranchised from most policy decisions, they lack even the power to rebel against egocentric and tyrannical supervisors. |

An employee who's one of hundreds, rather than one of a few, is unlikely to feel personally responsible for helping the organization adapt and change. |

I remember in that red leisure suit I sort of felt like a Pizza Hut employee, and the white one was the ultimate, with the white turtleneck collar, that was the ultimate in bad taste. |

So I have to ask companies I worked for in the USA for letters verifying my employment. I emailed several HR departments and was surprised that all responded within ~30 minutes, except for Apple
Every other company had my letter ready and emailed it to me. Apple took almost a week, then they sent me an email that spelled my name wrong and asked for my employee ID and the last 4 digits of my SSN
I have NO IDEA what my employee ID was, so I said that and eventually they sent me back a link to a PDF that I needed. THEN they sent me another email with a survey to ask how they did ...

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

Former anthropology student here: Actually, livestock was given to families for daughters because the family was losing a worker. Dudes were compensating families for the loss of labor, while themselves gaining a worker and the ability to generate new workers. The social contract of marriage has historically been about pooling/exchanging labor and resources, not sex. There have always been other ways to buy sex.

The violin symbolizes harmony and peace. Despite all these other things going on around you, you have a zen like state where these awful things aren't a matter to you. People stealing stuff from you symbolizes how you have lost something or are in fear of losing it. However of course the violin shows that this doesn't really matter to you.

I carried a stuffed animal with me till I was plenty old enough to not do that. My family thought I was a pussy, but I've realized over the years it was actually me experiencing existential problems early on in my life and that was just how I dealt with it as a child. I bring this up because it was a simba stuffed animal and this dance show played hakuna matata. i did end up giving that toy to a girl who ended up losing it or throwing it away or something. kinda symbolic lol gave an important part of me and it was trashed lmao. #philosophia

Hackers Stole 600 Gallons of Gas From Detroit Gas Station, Report Says
Police in Detroit are looking for two suspects who allegedly managed to hack a gas pump and steal over 600 gallons of gasoline, valued at about $1,800. From a report: The theft took place in the middle of the day and went on for about 90 minutes, with the gas station attendant unable to thwart the hackers. The theft, reported by Fox 2 Detroit, took place at around 1pm local time on June 23 at a Marathon gas station located about 15 minutes from downtown Detroit. At least 10 cars are believed to have benefitted from the free-flowing gas pump, which still has police befuddled. Here's what is known about the supposed hack...

Walmart Patents Cart That Reads Your Pulse, Temperature (vice.com) 114
Walmart recently applied to patent biometric shopping handles that would track a shopper's heart rate, palm temperature, grip force, and walking speed. "The patent, titled 'System And Method For A Biometric Feedback Cart Handle' and published August 23, outlines a system where sensors in the cart send data to a server," reports Motherboard. "That server then notifies a store employee to check on individual customers." From the report: Over time, the server can build a database of data compared against store location and stress response, the patent says -- potentially valuable information for store planning. Other uses o...

A Dutch first: Ingenious BMW theft attempt
It was Sunday afternoon when I installed the roof rack on my new BMW F30 320i. We were about to go on a 2 week trip to France and were intending to leave next Friday.
During that night, my girlfriend and I were fast asleep, when at 03:45 the doorbell rang. We looked at each other dazed. I got out of bed and attempted to journey downstairs in my boxers when the doorbell rang again. Before opening the door I went into the living room to gaze out of the window. A police car with 2 policemen was standing in front of our house. I opened the door and was...

39 Years Ago The World's First Spam Was Sent (Praise Him)
Wednesday was the 39th anniversary of the world's first spam, sent by Gary Thuerk, a marketer for Massachusetts' Digital Equipment Corporation in 1978 to over 300 users on Arpanet. It was written in all capital letters, and its body began with 273 more email addresses that wouldn't fit in the header. The DEC marketer "was reportedly trying to flag the attention of the burgeoning California tech community," reports the San Jose Mercury News. The message touted two demonstrations of the DECSYSTEM-20, a PDP-10 mainframe computer.
