Scientists Connect the Brains of Three People, Allowing Thought-Sharing
Neuroscientists have successfully hooked up a three-way brain connection to allow three people share their thoughts -- and in this case, play a Tetris-style game. The team thinks this wild experiment could be scaled up to connect whole networks of people, and yes, it's as weird as it sounds. It works through a combination of electroencephalograms (EEGs), for recording the electrical impulses that indicate brain activity, and transcranial magnetic stimulation, where neurons are stimulated using magnetic fields.
The researchers behind the new system have dubbed it BrainNet, and say it could eventually be used to connect many different minds together, even across the web.... For now it's very slow and not fully reliable, and this work has yet to be peer-reviewed by the neuroscience community, but it's a glimpse at some fanciful ways we could be getting our thoughts across to each other in the future -- maybe even pooling mental resources to try and tackle major problems. "Our results raise the possibility of future brain-to-brain interfaces that enable cooperative problem solving by humans using a 'social network' of connected brains," writes the team. |

Most of our brain cells are glial cells, once thought to be mere support cells, but now understood as having a critical role in brain function. Glial cells in the human brain are markedly different from glial cells in other brains, suggesting that they may be important in the evolution of brain function. |

There were years when I was a beer and tequila guy, then I got real fat. And then I found that you could actually go on a diet and drink scotch. Then I got hooked on scotch, and if you get hooked on scotch, then everything else just tastes wrong. |

Neuroscientists talk a lot about brain circuits. In fact, the word 'circuit' is probably misleading. We do not know where most circuits begin and end. And unlike an electrical circuit, brain connections are heavily reciprocal and recursive, so that a direction of information flow can be inferred but sometimes not proven. |

The scientist-community guy may get a $500,000 grant, and if his equipment works or doesn't work, he still gets a gold star for doing the science experiment. For me, there is no merit in anything for doing an experiment; I have to go home with pictures. |

Meanwhile the fact that the connection with the activity of memory in ordinary life is for the moment lost is of less importance than the reverse, namely, that this connection with the complications and fluctuations of life is necessarily still a too close one. |

Be true to the game, because the game will be true to you. If you try to shortcut the game, then the game will shortcut you. If you put forth the effort, good things will be bestowed upon you. That's truly about the game, and in some ways that's about life too. |

You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life. |

Connection between life and radioactive nuclei is straightforward. No life without tectonic activity, without volcanic activity. And we know very well that geothermal energy is mostly produced by decay of uranium, thorium, and potassium. |

Yes, I'm the same grumpy Gautam who smiles very less on the field. I go very quiet before going into the match. I guess it works for me, though my team-mates keep telling me it is just a game. |

Counter-intuitively, Koubeissi’s team found that the woman’s loss of consciousness was associated with increased synchrony of electrical activity, or brainwaves, in the frontal and parietal regions of the brain that participate in conscious awareness. Although different areas of the brain are thought to synchronise activity to bind different aspects of an experience together, too much synchronisation seems to be bad. The brain can’t distinguish one aspect from another, stopping a cohesive experience emerging.

Sleep Deprivation Disrupts Brain-Cell Communication, Study Finds (npr.org)
A new study published in the journal Nature Medicine found that sleep deprivation causes the bursts of electrical activity that brain cells use to communicate to become slower and weaker. "The finding could help explain why a lack of sleep impairs a range of mental functions, says Dr. Itzhak Fried, an author of the study and a professor of neurosurgery at the University of California, Los Angeles," reports NPR. From the report: The finding comes from an unusual study of patients being evaluated for surgery to correct severe epilepsy. As part of the evaluation, doctors place wires in the brain to find out where a pat...

Tantalizing But Preliminary Evidence of a 'Brain Microbiome'
An anonymous reader quotes a report from Science Magazine: We know the menagerie of microbes in the gut has powerful effects on our health. Could some of these same bacteria be making a home in our brains? A poster presented here this week at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience drew attention with high-resolution microscope images of bacteria apparently penetrating and inhabiting the cells of healthy human brains. The work is preliminary, and its authors are careful to note that their tissue samples, collected from cadavers, could have been contaminated. But to many passersby in the exhibit hall, the possibility t...

okay, so the first number is going to be about how Chancy really wants these poptarts but in the song she's revealing that she really wants a relationship with her hot priest roommate. because symbolism. no actually it's because they hooked up a couple times but never really acknowledge that fact, and they carry on as good friends the same as normal, which chancy appreciates, but she also feels like she knows the priest thinks about how they have hooked up and carry-on as normal without acknowledging it, and that feels very...interesting.
She interrupts this verse with like a chorus about wanting the poptarts. and you're (chorus members) just like "why does she want these poptarts so bad and why is this so weirdly important for her," ...

I think it'd be cool to see some kind of dystopian sci-fi movie come out where its like AI is everywhere and it's messing stuff up but there are people who can break the AI by acting really weird. Like if their behavior is out of distribution then the systems breakdown and it's kind of like hacking. Could have an opening scene where its like a business meeting or something and there is a human that suspects that the people he's meeting are machines, so he starts saying weirder stuff and the AI keeps the conversation going or something where it should have stopped or been confused. Could have some other parts where people just do really bizarre movements, dress weird, and make weird sounds to fool robots.

t is well known that a high salt diet leads to high blood pressure, a risk factor for an array of health problems, including heart disease and stroke. But over the last decade, studies across human populations have reported the association between salt intake and stroke irrespective of high blood pressure and risk of heart disease, suggesting a missing link between salt intake and brain health.
Interestingly, there is a growing body of work showing that there is communication between the gut and brain, now commonly dubbed the gut–brain axis. The disruption of the gut–brain axis contributes to a diverse range of diseases, including Parkinson’s disease and irritable bowel syndrome. Consequently, the developing field of gut–brain axis research is rapidly growing and evolving. Five years ago...

I like it when people say "I don't need drugs to feel good" or whatever, it's funny to me because your mind is still creating a barrier protecting yourself from the bad things. So even if you aren't using drugs your brain is working as a coping mechanism to block certain thoughts and events from your conscious.

It's no secret that Big Sherm smoke mad ganj. Lately been smoking about a half ounce a week. Sometimes when I am on a long run of being high from waking up to going to bed, I get lost in my head (lol wonder why) and I think that this is just how my brain and thoughts works now. But every time I take a break even for just a day or two, my head clears back up and thoughts flow naturally again. The point of me posting this is that weed is awesome. Everything in moderation (something I clearly have trouble with in all aspects of my life) but this really proves to me that ganj is great cuz I can just stop and be normal again. When I'm on a long kick of smoking I analyze how my brain is functioning and while it does have longterm effects, it really is crazy how I can get right back into things with just a few days of detox. I have quit drinking for the most part, next is cigarettes and weed.
